Kenosha, Wis (Civic Media) – In an effort to create more cops, Gateway Technical College is offering a tuition-free part-time law enforcement academy program. A statement from the college says it’s meant to address the needs of aspiring police officers who face time and financial constraints. This initiative comes as police departments in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha grapple with staffing challenges, leading to concerns about public safety and resource allocation.

The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) has seen a significant decrease in sworn officers since 2019, leading to concerns about public safety and resource allocation. It’s the same in the Racine Police Department, where projects like the “Violent Crime Reduction Initiative” are aiming to combat these challenges through collaboration with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department. Similarly, the Kenosha Police Department is adapting its recruitment process to attract qualified candidates and ensure public safety amidst increasing vacancies.

Gateway Technical College, with campuses in Racine, Kenosha, and Elkhorn, is introducing a tuition-free part-time law enforcement academy program for individuals aspiring to become police officers but facing constraints in time and finances. The Wisconsin Technical College System has awarded Gateway a grant to cover the tuition of 15 students in the upcoming part-time academy. The application deadline is March 1st, with an application workshop and physical fitness test scheduled for February 29th.

The initiative at Gateway is led by Amy Koeppel, the director of law enforcement training. She says the program caters to those with family and job commitments that hinder full-time enrollment and offers training flexibility on evenings and weekends. A statement from Gateway assures that the part-time academy will provide the same comprehensive training as full-time programs. Admission requirements include an associate degree or 40 post-secondary credits, with options for dual enrollment or credit completion during the academy program.
